5 Things I Did This Year For My Health and Wellbeing

Posted on December 11, 2019December 9, 2019

As the year wraps up, I am taking some time to reflect on some of the changes I’ve made this year. It’s a natural time to think about what has worked but also about what hasn’t worked. What lights you up and keeps you going? What drains you? Because we […]

Managing House Work with a Chronic Illness (And While Living Alone)

Posted on October 2, 2019November 6, 2019

It’s a Saturday morning and I’m going through my list of house and home-related tasks that need to be done. It’s been a particularly full work week and so many of the household tasks that I try to space out during the week haven’t been done yet. My list includes […]

After my cancer diagnosis...
Through my surgeries and treatment...
Through my divorce...
When I was trying to find a place to live...
Right now...
There have been times when my present situation has been far from ideal. I've felt lost, scared and hopeless.

It is possible to accept what is happening in the present AND also know that it will not be our "always". Holding space for both at the same time takes practice and patience. But this approach can help to process the present, not avoid our feelings and seek supports we need.

Sending you love if you need this reminder 🌱

Early in 2020, I was feeling burnt out.

I tried to slow down. I resigned from a part-time job in January, I restructured my weeks and reduced tasks to what I thought were just the priorities. I built in self-care time. It wasn't enough.

Then I was forced to STOP EVERYTHING by a severe health incident.

Upon reflection, this pattern has happened before. When I have pushed myself and taken on way too much, my body gives my warning signs. If I don't heed them enough, then my body takes that decision away from me.

I still felt angry and betrayed by my body. But I know it has wisdom. My body is doing what it needs to preserve itself and me. I'm working on this relationship with myself.

Fast forward and after months of doing nothing so that I could recover from a brain injury, I am still exhausted. Exhausted from everything 2020 has thrown at us. Exhausted from trying to heal alone during a pandemic.

But I'm learning. When my body says "can't do that today", then I try to honour that without judgement.

2020 is an extraordinary year. 6 months in, it's re- teaching me all the things I thought I'd already learnt. And many things I never knew I needed to learn.

What has 2020 taught you so far?

Some days and weeks, it can be hard to believe that we deserve and can create a life worth living.

But maybe that's where the real healing lies. Otherwise, we're not going deep enough.

I'm learning what I push away because I'm scared of being hurt. It's okay to fear things like heartache, rejection, loss, sickness but it's important to feel and process them. *

I usually talk about wellness on this platform. But wellness is inherently political. Who we are - our race, gender, ability, immigration status and more all factor into how we can access "health and wellness". Some of you may know that I have been working on anti-racism projects in healthcare and public health in Toronto, and through my PhD for some years now.

It is necessary work. I am continuously learning about what it means to unlearn, show up, work in solidarity and put in the unpaid emotional labour. This often happens off screen and isn't something I have often documented publicly on social media for many reasons.

Sometimes I feel torn about these decisions and between different projects I give my energy to. But moments like this in the world highlight priorities and the deeper connections between all the work I take on.

I look forward to sharing more of all my health and advocacy related work, research and projects through this account.

There are many anti-racism resources available online and this repost below by @livinghyphen is just one of many out there. I've included their link in my bio as well and encourage you to engage, educate and take action.

We’ve created a resource on our website to help educate ourselves and each other on anti-racism and anti-Blackness - link in bio to access. We urge you to use any and all resources provided, to share this widely, and to let us know of any other media that you have found helpful at this time. This is an ongoing work-in-progress that we hope to create together and in community.⠀ *

It's not enough to say you aren't racist. Being anti-racist is an active process. To be silent is to be complicit because racism is pervasive and systemic. Take the time to unlearn and take action.

These days have been about trying to find and maintain a sense of balance.

Balance between doing things and giving ourselves permission to rest and relax.

Balance between feeling the feelings and not wallowing / getting swallowed up by them.

Balance between looking beyond ourselves and looking within.

Hoping you find and enjoy those moments of balance. 🧡

Made cupcakes last week and shared these with my lovely neighbour who has been leaving random notes and gifts outside my door.🧁 I *was* cutting down on refined white sugar but then the pandemic happened. There is a limit, people.

I've still been keeping up with eating only gluten-free and dairy-free as I didn't want to add to all my symptoms during this time. I used a mix to make these - swipe to see (not sponsored!). I'm hanging in there, friends. Hope you are too 💗

Writing & posting cards - because I've been alone for 7 weeks and the loneliness is heavy.

Warm chocolate oat milk at night and soothing music - because I haven't been able to sleep until past 2 am most nights.

Waiting - because healing from a brain injury is a test in patience.

Wearing warm and comfy clothes - because I've been carrying a ball of anxiety because of some recent news.

Watching and streaming shows - because sometimes I'm so sad it physically hurts to feel it.

Writing and journaling - because I have words in my head that demand to be processed.

Walks not workouts - because chronic pain days.

Wondering about my future babies - because mother's day comes around and not everyone is a parent or has an easy to define relationship.

Welcoming 1 to 1 private interactions on social media - because people have been struggling more and we all need to be heard a bit more.

It's been a struggle. These days I've been trying to listen to what my body and mind need. But I'd be lying if I pretended that was easy or simple.

All we can do are the little things that make sense for us to direct our energy towards and to get us from moment to moment.

Take care of yourselves 💕
